Approximately 90% of the food in Ibiza is imported from outside the island. This contributes to harmful carbon emissions. Local farmers also find it difficult to compete with intensive production from outside, leading to the abandonment of farmland. By buying locally-grown and produced food you will support the farmers who care for the countryside and provide opportunities for local companies.
What you can do
- Buy local, preferably organic, produce
- Try and eat seasonally
- Ask your grocers for local products
- Order a basket (“cestas”) of local, organic products from suppliers such as EcoFeixes
- Buy direct from the farm. Amics de la Terra has a useful guide on local, organic farms with their contact details. Some also offer the possibility to deliver a cestas.
Supporting local food production helps to preserve the land and traditional, farming landscapes of Ibiza and Formentera.
